So, here's the deal...
I took a job on a political campaign last month and, as some of you may have noticed, I have not had time to contribute to the blog.
I am proposing to the SB Nation folks that we bring someone to help me on board.
I would like to find someone who is willing to blog on Husky basketball for the rest of the season and then back me up in football season. That way I would be the main guy covering football and could exclusively focus on that.
My goal is to make this blog one of the premier Husky news sources. But it has become obvious to me that I cannot do this alone. If you're interested, please send me an e-mail to udubdish@gmail.com
In case you're interested, here's a look at how the Huskies regular season opponents faired in their respective bowl games. 9 of the 13 opponents made it to a bowl game and the Dawgs record against these teams was 2-7. 4 of those 9 teams won their bowl game (and all were Pac-10 teams).

Yeah, that would be Jon Brockman and those words are sadly true. So, did you notice that WSU is #4 in the nation? Props to Tony Bennett and the program he's put in place there. He's put together a nice group of core players and his strategy to the game is what has got him results in Pullman. WSU plays a very slow, defensive minded game. You know how you're old basketball coach used to say that "defense wins games"? Well, it's true and that's Bennett's style. The Cougars allow only 49.7 points per game.
Pomeroy Prediction
L, 67-61[64] (24%)
Pomeroy picks WSU by six points at Hec-Ed. That might be closer than I see this being. WSU plays very solid defense and I foresee them forcing UW to shoot on the perimeter. This would mean that I don't see much of a game for Brockman. This is Ryan Appleby's chance to step up and carry the team. If he's on tonight, we've got a shot. Make it happen Dawgs.

At 9-4 the Huskies head into the Pac-10 schedule. The starting lineup and rotations have been in flux most of the season, and this is largely reflective of the position UW finds itself in. There is a tremendous amount of talent on this roster, but they are very young and Coach Romar seems to be shuffling the pieces around to find the right fit.
So, let's see how the Huskies stack up heading into conference play.
According to Ken Pomeroy's rankings (his model of RPI), the Huskies rank 9th in the Pac-10 and 67th overall. But, as you'll also notice there, the Pac-10 is the #1 ranked conference. Without a doubt, UW is in the deepest conference in college basketball this season. Which is why it will be easy to view our losses to teams that are better than us as reflective of our true ability. There are some great teams we are going to have to play. If we win, I think we'll all feel vindicated about believing in this team. But, if we don't, I think we should realize that this program is in transition still. We've built a foundation for this to be a top program and it has had solid recruiting classes, but it is taking time for that to come around to results on the court (especially since losing both Hawes and Oliver of the 2005 class).
In the end, I think we'll play the Pac-10 close, but probably end up somewhere in the bottom part of the standings. Say 7th or 8th. But, I'd be thrilled to see things begin to gel. And if that happens we'll snag a tournament spot and come out maybe 5th in the conference.
Tomorrow night we'll start off against WSU with a chance to bring down our hated rival.
And, we're 0 for 1 in the new year. According to the Seattle Times Dewayne Walker will be staying at UCLA as Defensive Coordinator for the Bruins. Sounds like Willingham put a lot of pressure on Walker and gave him the hard sell, but in the end it wasn't enough. Walker has a son that has committed to play for UCLA next season, so that might have been a factor. Neuheisel gets his #1 recruit and screws the Huskies over again. And as the article ends it's "uncertain where UW goes now" as the DC search continues.

According to Brian Dohn of the LA Daily News, Neuheisel has called Dewayne Walker his "No. 1 recruit" and hopes to keep him on as defensive coordinator. UW is definitely makes a push for Walker, so we'll see how this plays out.
According to this report, Rick Neuheisel is in as head coach of the UCLA Bruins.
I've mentioned before how this could impact UW as far as our defensive coordinator search and perhaps even rounding out the recruiting class. As Bob Condotta reported earlier this week, Dewayne Walker has been reportedly offered a two year deal by UW to be the new defensive coordinator. However, there have also been reports that he may stay at UCLA as DC. But, I have to say the telling piece of news is this: Walker met with Willingham the same day he has his second interview with UCLA. To me, that signals Walker was looking for a back up plan should things fall through at UCLA. It seems that has happened now. I'll update any news on this as it comes in.
The Huskies travel to Baton Rouge to take on the LSU Tigers (7-4). The Tigers have obviously had a tough time adjusting to life with out Glen Davis. Last season the Huskies beat LSU in a game where Spencer Hawes, Jon Brockman, and Quincy Pondexter carried the team and completely shut down Davis. Obviously, both teams are in a different place this year.
This game is a very big game for the Huskies. Win today and we at least salvage the non-conference schedule. As it is right now, our best quality win was against Utah (who are now 8-3). That won't be enough to make it to the tournament even if we break even in the conference. We need this win today to get some momentum heading into January.
Pomeroy Prediction
L, 79-76 [75] (38%)
Pomeroy sees a close game here, but only a 38% chance for a Husky win. We need a big game from Brockman again this year and a scorer to step up around the perimeter if we're going to pull this off.

Preview
The Cal State Northridge Matadors (7-2) come to town tonight to take on the Huskies. The Matadors play a very uptempo style of offense. They've scored 90+ points four times this season and have only been below 70 points in two of their games. We can expect a lot of offense in this one. For UW to win this one they'll need to be on their game from the field, stop missing free points at the line, and keep up with the Matadors on the fast break. Overall, we're the favorites, but if I had to pick an upset loss this might be the one.

LET'S GO HUSKIES!
I've seen a lot of conflicting reports the past couple days, so let's try to make sense of all of it here and update you on the latest involving Rick Neuheisel at UCLA and Walker becoming the next defensive coordinator here at UW.
This morning, Bob Condotta's article for the Seattle Times lists DeWayne Walker as "possibly a leading candidate for the job if he isn't retained with the Bruins as head coach or as a coordinator." So, it would appear from Condotta's sources that there is definitely interest from UW for Walker.
An interesting note here to bring up though is salary:
So that could involved a bump in salary for offensive coordinator Tim Lappano and overall the program would be pumping out more money for their coaching staff. There is no indication that UW won't be willing to do that for the right guy, but it is a potential obstacle to consider down the line.
But, Walker may not even get an interview with UW according to this at Bruins Nation. There are some contradictions from what is reported there compared to the article above. For example, Jay Locey, an assistant at Oregon State, is listed as a possible candidate, but has since told Condotta he was not interested in the position.
Ultimately, this gets to a fundamental problem with whoever is courted for the defensive coordinator position. Willingham, by all accounts, is on the hot seat and another losing season pretty much guarantees his termination. If you're a guy coming in from the outside and looks to advance your own career, does that seem like a very enticing situation? What I am getting at is that we might have interest for guy like DeWayne Walker and others, but in the end they might avoid UW because of the lack of stability in the program. For now, I'd say we definitely are interested in Walker. But we don't know much about whether that interest will be mutual and all this about "an intense push" that we will make for him.

Final Score: 84-65
For a game that was tied with 38 seconds to go in the 1st half, the Huskies come out all right in this one tonight. Portland State hung around, but in the final 8 minutes of the game only scored 4 points.
- Solid showing for Jon Brockman tonight with 24 points and 12 rebounds.
- Ryan Appleby might be finding his stroke as he provided 7 for 11 shooting from 3 point range coming off the bench. I don't think Appleby has starting talent, but he can be a useful shooting threat off the bench and tonight that worked well.
- The key stat in this one was the rebounding. The Huskies out-rebounded the Vikings 31-13 and had 11 offensive rebounds.
