Huskies get a vote in the AP Poll
By andrewjh Section: Diaries

Despite having a losing record, the Huskies still got a vote in the AP Poll. Here is a look at his ballot. Nice to see the Dawgs get some respect despite losing the last three against some solid teams. Also a sign of respect for the Pac-10.

And USC falls to #2 in the AP poll. Maybe we can at least take some credit for that.

Did the UW almost win? Or did USC almost give it away?
By thefranchise Section: Diaries
Posted on Sun Sep 30, 2007 at 01:06:32 PM EDT

My personal opinion is that USC almost gave that game away. They had so many penalties and turnovers, the UW were lucky to score two TDs off of the turnovers in the first half. The total yards tells the whole story USC 463 - UW 188 yards.

As a UW fan, I think there are good things to take away. The coaching staff did a good job with the play calls and decisions, the players just didn't execute.

USC fans? You should be lucky to come away with the win and keep your national championship hopes alive but there are some holes there, especially on offense.

Back to the UW, like the loss to UCLA and to OSU, too many basic fundamental mistakes. We're not talking about mistakes where the kid misread the defense or misread his key, we're talking about form tackling, fielding a punt, catching the ball. You can't fix those things in 1 or 2 weeks, it's a talent thing.

I think that while the UW has looked pretty good so far this season, Ty must start dominating the recruiting battle. This past February was a good start, but we must keep the momentum. We need playmakers, not walkons. This isn't high school football, you can only scheme and gameplan so far, your talent needs to come through.

Why is BRoy talking to Katz??
By thefranchise Section: Diaries
Posted on Fri Sep 28, 2007 at 04:59:54 PM EDT

So, the UW blogosphere and message boards are giving this story by Andy Katz of ESPN some run.

It basically quotes BRoy as saying:

I think they'll make the NIT for sure, but the NCAA is going to be tough.

Katz goes on to quote BRoy as saying the following about Venoy Overton:

I think he gives them something they didn't have last year, a creative guard from the perimeter. He was breaking down the defense, dropping down and dishing in practice. After watching the team last year, that's what they were missing.

Then Katz writes:

Roy's also said lead guard Justin Dentmon is not a penetrating point guard, or at least not as savvy as Overton.

I don't have a problem with the quotes, but I have a problem with the way Katz has used what appears to be a casual conversation between a couple of people shooting the shit, inserted some quotes to justify his uninformed opinion and marketed it as a "BRoy thinks the Huskies will suck" article.

I'd like to hear the entirety of the conversation before coming to any conclusions. The BRoy I know would never rush to such hasty conclusions. Shame on you Katz...

Phil Picks USC, but has UW scoring 20
By thefranchise Section: Diaries
Posted on Thu Sep 27, 2007 at 05:01:49 PM EDT

Now, first I want to say I am a Husky fan.

OK, now for a little reality. Phil Steele who is widely respected for his game picks has this one pegged at 37-20 for USC.

Does anyone really think that UW will score 20 points on possibly the best defense in the country?? Against OSU, we scored 14 and that was with a late TD over the second stringers. Even if it is a blowout, I see the Dawgs scoring a max 14 points, maybe 10.

Tell me I'm on crack here or something...

Go Huskies!

Appleby/Brooks from a Duck perspective
By addictedtoquack Section: Diaries
Posted on Fri Mar 02, 2007 at 01:02:47 AM EDT

I want to give a Duck take on the whole Brooks/Appleby.

First off, I want to make it clear that I am not excusing Brooks' actions.  To throw a punch like that is unacceptable under any circumstance.  Brooks was suspended three games, and publicly criticized, both in Eugene and Seattle, and it was well deserved.  Anyone who tries to say that Brooks' actions were justified is an idiot.

Now, I can see why Brooks lost his cool.  In the heat of the game, Brooks obviously felt that Appleby's elbow was intentional.  I don't believe that it was, but Brooks didn't have the advantage of seeing the spectacle from a distance.  That being said, even if the elbow were intentional it doesn't justify Brooks' actions.  It just gets at the "why" of the whole incident.  Many people have the "revenge" attitude when they feel that they have been wronged.  Again, that does not justify Brooks' actions.  But it does show that he had a reason, even if it was a misguided one.

Now, lets get to the aftermath of the incident.  Brooks wrote a letter of apology.  Whether at the time he did that on his own free will or if he was compelled by the University is unknown.  But what is known is that Brooks is not only a changed player this season, but a changed man.  And he credits that incident as one of the factors in the change.  He has expressed his regret over his actions over and over.  Nobody who follows this program closely is not convinced that Brooks is truly sorry for the incident.

Here is where the problem lies.  It is very clear that Brooks has learned from the incident.  It is clear that Appleby has not.  You see, one thing that is an element of any faith, life guidelines, or general human decentness is the act of forgiveness.  Now, we are all human, and I would not forgive someone who murdered, raped, etc.  But this incident was the equivalent of a schoolyard fight.  While certainly unfounded, something that had no impact on Appleby's life.  While nobody has hit me since middle school, it certainly did not take me over a year to forgive anybody for it.  In fact, the last person that I got in a fight with in 7th grade, I have been good friends with since a few months after.  And I don't buy Appleby's excuse that he was upset with Brooks lack of punishment.  A three game suspension is a big punishment in college, and comparable to what an NBA player would get for a similar incident.  (And to UW fans who think that Brooks got off easy for being suspended for the UW game, remember that the suspension caused him to miss his last game in his hometown.  That game meant more than any other to him, and it was taken away.  That was why that game was chosen, not to "protect" him).

This is what bothers me about Appleby.  Brooks has recognized his mistake, become a better person because of it, and moved on.  I am not saying that Appleby has to like Brooks.  He can hate him with a passion (as he obviously does).  But to not shake his had before that game was to fail to recognize Brooks as a fellow human being.  Not only did it lack compassion, but it was every bit as cold as Brooks' action was.  Even if it did not cause physical pain, the intent was the same, to place another person beneath him.

The difference is that Brooks has learned from the incident.  Appleby, obviously has not.  UW fans try to play off Appleby as an innocent victim for being chided by the Mac Court crowd this weekend.  Appleby is far from innocent.  Both Appleby and Brooks are guilty of classless actions.  And both should be ashamed of themselves for it.  One clearly is.  And one clearly is not.  The latter is Appleby.

ESPN is reporting that QB Isaiah Stanback is probably out for the year with a Lisfranc injury. It appears that he was originally diagnosed with a sprained foot but further tests have shown a fracture of the Lisfranc Joint that will probably require surgery.

Great come from behind for a program that is finding its way under a good coach.

And right now ND is losing to MSU.

Good for TY.

But even better for the great football fans from Seattle.

Congrats.

PS: Although one-line diaries are prohibited on U-Dub Dish, couldn't give this diary any more thought on a night like this. :)

Suspended Ref To Officiate UCLA-UW Game
By DumpDorrell Section: Diaries
Posted on Fri Sep 22, 2006 at 07:31:20 PM EDT

Just fyi. One of the suspended officials from the Oregon-Oklahoma game will be on the field Saturday officiating the UCLA-Washington game.  His name will not be released until tomorrow. Suspensions will be delayed and staggered because the Pac-10 doesn't have enough officials to cover the shortfall on such short notice.  More info after the jump if you are interested:
