A big win for the Huskies last night to advance to the semifinals of Preseason NIT. They'll face Texas A&M next Wednesday in Madison Square Garden. Some thoughts on last night's game:

  • Venoy Overton fits in with exactly what you ought to expect from the Huskies this season. Think back to the hustle this team showed a few seasons ago in their tournament run. Sure, those guys were under-hyped, undersized, and underrated, but they played hard and produced results. Overton is the type of player that plays with pure hustle. Loose ball on the floor last night. Overton was quick to lunge out on the floor. Ball going out of bounds on the Huskies, into action springs Venoy who saves it by deflecting it off a stunned Ute. Overton has vision for the court and is able to spread the ball around. He won't score a ton of points, but he'll get the ball to the guys who will while breaking down defenses. Reminds me a lot of Will Conroy. I have to say that I vastly underrated what this true freshmen could do for this season's team.

  • Jon Brockman single handedly won the game for the Huskies last night. He was all over the boards with 18 total and scored 31 points. Brockman is an absolute force down low and showed last night that he can play with guys who even have a few inches in height advantage. When the Dawgs aren't busting teams up and down the floor with their quickness, look for them to be feeding the ball down low on the block to Brockman. He can hit short jump shots on the block and is the best rebounder on the team.

  • Justin Holiday is another true freshman who is going to make an impact this season. Some games he might not play as much, but last night he showed that he plays solid defense. He shut down one of Utah's leading scorer in Steven Weigh holding him to only two of his 21 points in the final ten minutes of the game. Holiday was a major reason the Huskies won this game, even if it may not seem like it at face value. He fit well in the rotation at the end of the game and will be a major asset if he can play solid defense.

In my mind, those three guys are what put Washington over the top last night. This team is much different from the team you saw last year and they proved it last night. Not too many in the national media might be talking about us right now, but if we keep it up in New York next week, then they'll know what Washington is about pretty quick. More on that game coming early next week. Also, the Huskies next game of the season will be against Eastern Washington on Sunday.
